The Brief:

Chetwoods specialise in the design of large-scale industrial and logistics buildings. Buildings that most people drive past without ever considering the thought, craft and design intelligence that went into creating them. The brief, developed across an ongoing partnership spanning multiple projects and has remained consistent throughout: photograph these buildings in a way that communicates the design intent behind them.

Large industrial buildings are a genuinely challenging subject. They're vast, they exist in often unremarkable landscapes and they can be easy to reduce to something flat and functional in the wrong hands. Getting them right requires an understanding of architecture, space and design that goes well beyond pointing a camera at a facade and pressing the shutter.

The approach:

Internal photography on projects of this scale is about communicating space. The height, the volume, the quality of natural light penetrating a structure designed to maximise it. These are the things that need to be visible in every internal image we produce. We use both wide angle imagery and zoomed perspectives to deliver real senses of scale & height.

External photography is about presence and context. How the building sits in its landscape and how the design decisions made at drawing stage translate into a physical structure at full scale. We a collection of images that shows off full context and scale, ensuring lines and features are seen as they were drawn.

Aerial photography, adds the dimension that ground-level photography of large industrial buildings can never fully provide, scale. For logistics and industrial architecture specifically, aerial work isn't a nice addition. It's often the most important images in the set.
